Student Interview: Nick Bliven
What do you enjoy most about NKU's MPA program?
I enjoy many aspects of the MPA program including the caring professors, engaging content, and flexible schedule.
Why did you choose NKU to further your education?
I recently graduated from NKU with my Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies. From this experience, I understood the university’s commitment to student success. I also have heard wonderful things about the program from my peers.
What has been your favorite class/professor/project so far? Why?
It is difficult to pick just one! I have enjoyed each course in a different way. If I had to choose one, I would pick Leading in Diverse Public Environments. It has challenged me to think outside the box, considering unique perspectives, asserting concrete recommendations, and expanding my knowledge on equity and inclusion. I strongly encourage this course to any student in the MPA program.
How do topics in the classroom relate to your career/current position?
I believe all of the courses I have taken include topics that can be incorporated into most careers in the nonprofit and public sectors. For example, I participated in a service-learning project in the Resource Acquisitions and Management course about electronic philanthropy (e-philanthropy). Society has shifted into a more digital world in recent years. I have been able to apply the content from this project to areas of my current position. I foresee the topics discussed in future courses will follow a similar trend.
Do you have any advice for people considering the MPA program?
I recommend connecting with current MPA students and recent alumni. Their insight influenced my decision to apply. I also encourage people who are interested to talk with faculty members about the program.
