Interviewing in a Virtual World

Interview in a Virtual World

This week during my capstone course, we completed mock interviews. Normally, this is done through the in person class and NKU MPA alumni conducting the interview. Due to COVID and class being online, we had to complete the mock interviews through Zoom. This was a different experience as I have never done an interview in this setting. There is so much more to think about when doing this type of interview.

It all starts way before the actual interview, like a normal interview you need to prepare for the job you are interviewing for. Next you have to be aware your background. When on a virtual interview, you have to make sure you do not have dirty clothes on the floor, unprofessional photos in view, or animals interrupting. While we can't control everything and most people are understanding of that, these are things we should try to avoid. There is also lighting. Having windows behind you makes for a good background but can cause to much light and make it hard to see you or anything else on the screen. Additionally, what you wear matters. Yes, we all try to be professional but video can pick up patterns differently or be distracting. There is much more prep work in creating a professional setting and being comfortable in front of the camera.

Right before the interview begins you have to make sure audio works properly. Then the interview starts, which means normal jitters kick in. Making sure you answer questions properly and thoroughly, but you can't make eye contact the same way. Now you have to look into a camera and avoid staring at the video screen because it makes you look like you aren't making eye contact or engaged.

Virtual interviews have brought a sense of ease as there is less traveling or worry about showing up to the correct location at the right time, but does provide a few over challenges. As I apply of jobs and hope to move into the interview process, this exercise was helpful and informative.
